Well we’re two months in to 2008 and I know that many of you will know people who made health based resolutions. Two months in how are they doing? One feature of resolutions is the large scale assault people put into their new activities. This usually results in burnout and failure to follow through.
If you know someone who is experiencing burnout from their resolutions then please feel free to pass the following ideas along to them.
When large declarations and actions are made, but fail to achieve the intended results it is worth considering a small scale approach. By this I mean taking the smallest possible amount of action towards the new lifestyle / health habits.
Sometimes it seems laughable, but building up from the tiniest changes can allow you to build momentum and over the longer term new habits form and take you to where you want to go. Some people might laugh at the tiny nature of the actions, but does it matter if in the longer term you are living the kind of healthy lifestyle that you want.
Whether the changes being made are to exercise more, eat more fresh fruit or get more sleep - taking a tiny amount of action consistently will soon get the brain wanting more. And then bang! One day you’re doing what you want to be doing!
